Short Biography
Currently I reside in Parksville where the Vancouver Island landscapes invite me to capture the essence of its beauty in my artworks. Each day is a sensory adventure—translating the rustle of leaves, the dance of colors, beaches, ocean views, forests and the ever-present textures of the natural world onto my canvas. The culmination of each artwork leaves me feeling refreshed and excited to create more artworks of nature, in all its magnificence, with its infinite palette of sights, sounds, colors, and textures.
Biography
Hello, let me introduce myself, I’m Cathy Kluthe. I’m originally from Alberta, moved to Vancouver, then most recently moved to Parksville. That makes me a prairie girl to city girl to island girl which has greatly influenced my imagery from farms to beach scenes. Moving to Parksville has given me the opportunity to start my new studio where I am taking the time to develop and express my newest ideas and exploration of artworks. At an early age I realized that drawing was my form of communication and spent countless hours drawing and painting. It gave me enough confidence and joy that I knew this would be my lifelong path. My influences have ranged from the simplistic Japanese style, the Renaissance, journeys from around the world. I am also deeply inspired by my family’s vintage photo album and love the vintage black and white outdoor images of people and their animals on the farm. Nature also has a big influence on me and I am forever drawing, trees, beaches, and birds as part of my practice. After exploring many different styles of art I now know that my strength is my drawing and my painting skills and I see my acrylic painting as flat graphic rather than expressive/impressionistic. My recent influence is blending flat semi-realistic/graphic imagery with abstract backgrounds. I am also exploring textures from natural objects combined with acrylic paint; mixed mediums that include charcoal, chalk pastels, and collage. I graduated with an Art & Design diploma from Red Deer College, and a Visual Communication diploma from Alberta College of Art. I have also studied traditional Chinese painting in Guangzhou, PRC, and Calligraphy in Japan. Always looking to explore new ideas I always participate in various on-line and in-person workshops. Professionally, I have also had several group and solo exhibitions in BC and Alberta. As a result, I am fortunate to have several works purchased for private and business collections throughout my years as a professional artist. I was a primary art teacher at an independent school in Richmond. During this time, I also led and facilitated many artists in residences programs through the Art Starts organization which included a larges sized mural for a public school: in-class art programs for children and adults and a six-month Intergenerational workshop at several elementary schools and the senior’s community.
