The Steampunk Recycled Metal Miniature Sculpture Project Is a family focused event and competition that is open to everyone who is 5 years and older. Anyone under the age of twelve must be accompanied by an Adult. You will turn “trash into treasures” by recycling scrap metal. All materials required, aside from your own collection of great metal ‘junk’, will be provided, including gloves and masks for those that need them. Local Artists will be on site to guide you. We encourage collaboration among all participants. TRADE JUNK WITH EACH OTHER. 🙌🏼

Grab a few friends or family members and have fun searching for old metal and glass items that might otherwise be headed to the landfill. Check the “junk drawer” in your home, ask to search through your Grandfather’s workshop, save tins, jars, lids and wire. See if anyone you know has any old costume jewelry. There is a Suggested List of Items below. Click the link to see ideas.

This project has three key elements.

1. The Scavenger Hunt ~ Participants will collect their own Scrap Metal during the weeks prior to October 6th.

2. The Hands-On Workshop ~ Artists will be leading the workshop where you will learn to create your own unique recycled metal sculpture using your scavenged items.

3. The Competition ~ You will have one week to complete your sculpture at home using the skills you have learned. You will drop off your final masterpiece or pieces, at a location TBA. Judges will select the winning sculpture and an award of $50 will be announced. All sculptures will be displayed in the Atrium at City Hall until the end of October. Afterwards, you will come and collect your sculptures and proudly display them at home.

Oceanside Community Culture Days is a group dedicated to the planning, funding, and executing of BC Culture Days events for the Oceanside area on Vancouver Island. Parksville, Qualicum, Nanoose Bay, Errington, Combs, and Bowser are the main cities. We are a group of volunteers from the Oceanside Community Arts Council, the McMillan Arts Centre, and the City of Parksville, led by local Artist and Community Outreach Organizer, Pattiann Withapea. Our mandate is to provide our community with a unique and inclusive roster of events to celebrate BC Culture Days annually.

The DeCosmos Fine Arts Society founded nearly 60 years ago is a vibrant non profit society and active group of over 135 artists who meet monthly in Parksville, encourage the creation of original visual arts within the group and show their work in local art venues throughout the year.
