About

Dotun Popoola from Lagos, Nigeria is one of the most revered Metal Sculptors in the world and he is coming to Oceanside to grace us with his presence for BC Culture Days. Dotun is not only a Sculptor, he is one of the foremost advocates for Climate Change and in particular, recycling. All of his works are created from Scrap Metal. He possesses an otherworldly understanding of anatomy and with precision welding expertise, he is able to turn a pile of trash into treasure. We are excited to welcome him to our community where, over the course of one month you will be able to join him for his demonstration Metal Art sessions, attend an evening Artists Talk to hear all about his travels, his upcoming participation in COP 29 in Baka, Azerbaijan, and how his passion drove him to build the Scrap Art Museum in his home city in Nigeria.

Dotun has invited all community members to include a piece of memorabilia that has personal meaning to them, in his sculpture to connect the art piece to the community. If you have an old spoon that belonged to your Grandmother, some horseshoes that were worn by one of your horses, an old metal snuff box or flask, anything that invokes memories of loved ones, you will be able to drop it off and Dotun will include it in the sculpture. Got any old spurs laying around? How about an old saxophone or a flute? Buckle up everyone, Dotun is a cowboy. Really. He learned to weld from a mentor in North Dakota where he rode on cattle drives, roped cattle, fell hard for country music, cowboy boots, and cowboy hats. The man is a walking Ted Talk. Details to be announced in late August. .
